Carlo Di Palma, born April 17, 1925 in Rome, where he died on July 9, 2004, was an Italian cinematographer and director.
Carlo Di Palma began as a second and then first assistant cameraman on Italian films between 1942 and 1954, becoming a director of photography in 1956, working notably with Michelangelo Antonioni. In 1983, he moved to the United States for several years, where he met Woody Allen, with whom he would be a regular collaborator (along with his Swedish colleague Sven Nykvist) on eleven films and one television film, from 1986 to 1997. He then returned to Italy to finish his days.
In the 1970s, he directed three Italian comedies, starring Monica Vitti, his then-partner, and he also wrote the screenplay for one of them. In 1980, he was director of photography for a production of La clemenza di Tito, Mozart's opera directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, for Italian television.
He is the uncle of Dario Di Palma (1932-2004), who was also a cinematographer.
