Vitali Yevgenyevich Kanevsky (Russian: Vitaliy Evgenyevich Kanevsky), born September 4, 1935, in Partizansk in the Russian Far East, is a Soviet and later Russian film director, producer, and screenwriter. He won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He received this award in 1990 for the film Don't Move, Die, Resurrect. That same year, the film won the Félix Award for Best Screenplay and, five years later, the Stalker Festival Prize. For the sequel to this film—An Independent Life—Vitali won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1992. He currently lives in France. In 1990, he was nominated twice for the Nika Award for Best Film and Best Director. In the first category, it lost to The Asthenic Syndrome, and in the second to Stanislav Govorukhin's You Can't Live Like This.
